NPP polls: Voting under way in Accra amid heavy police presence

Saturday’s election will be a kickoff to the national conference on 4 November 2023, where the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general election will be selected

Voting has commenced at the YMCA Technical Training Centre, where the Greater Accra branch of the New Patriotic Party is holding the regional vote in the NPP special electoral college.

Some 958 delegates nationwide are expected to decide the fate of the ten NPP presidential aspirants by selecting five candidates for the party’s presidential primary slated for 4 November 2023.

Voting at the YMCA Centre began at 9am and is expected to close at 1pm.

Seventy-two delegates (including one proxy) will cast their ballot in the Greater Accra regional polls.

They comprise 32 constituency chairmen, three regional representatives on the National Council, four founding members, 17 regional executives and 14 Members of Parliament (including the regional minister).

As of 7am, the Electoral Commission had already set up the voting booth in readiness for the announced time when voting will commence. The agents of the various presidential aspirants were also present at the centre to follow the process.

There is a heavy police presence at the voting centre, with police officers positioned at vantage points to maintain law and order. Individuals without accreditation are not allowed to enter the voting centre.

The ten presidential aspirants, in the order in which they will appear on the ballot paper are: Kennedy Agyapong, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Joe Ghartey, Kwadwo Poku, Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, Kofi Konadu Apraku, Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko and Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia.
