Waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited says it has deployed 2,000 personnel and heavy equipment across the country to support a two-day national clean-up campaign ordered by President John Dramani Mahama following recent floods.
The exercise, which began on Friday, focuses on desilting drains, clearing refuse and disinfecting flood-affected communities to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.
Speaking to journalists during the operation, Zoomlion Managing Director Doris Kwekwor Adjei said the company had mobilised tractors, backhoes, compaction trucks, tricycles and other equipment to assist local authorities.
“We have deployed our equipment… to support communities in this exercise. We have 2,000 men on the ground,” she said.
Adjei said the company had also opened transfer stations and sent fumigation teams to communities including Alajo to help prevent the spread of diseases.
“In times like this, we are prone to certain health risks,” she said.
She said indiscriminate littering and poor sanitation habits remained major obstacles to keeping communities clean, urging Ghanaians to take greater responsibility for waste disposal.
“Sanitation is a continuous thing. It cannot be a nine-day wonder,” she said, adding that sustained public education was needed to improve waste management practices.
Adjei also welcomed plans by the government to review waste management contracts, saying Zoomlion was prepared to work under any new arrangements.
“We are looking forward to that… Together, we can support the government because we are Ghanaians, and Ghanaian challenges must, and should, be resolved by Ghanaians,” she said.
The nationwide clean-up campaign is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, with authorities targeting clogged drains, accumulated waste and flood-hit areas as part of efforts to reduce the impact of future flooding and improve public health.
