Zijin Golden Ridge strengthens ties with Forestry Commission after acquiring Akyem Gold Mine

Zijin Golden Ridge Limited (ZGRL), the new operators of the Akyem Gold Mine, has taken strategic steps to deepen its relationship with the Forestry Commission following the acquisition of the site from Newmont Golden Ridge Limited.
The company’s leadership, including its new executives and Senior Manager of Sustainability and External Relations, Derek Boateng, paid a courtesy call on the Acting Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Hugh C.A. Brown, and his Executive Management Team in Accra.
The visit aimed to formally introduce the new leadership of ZGRL and reaffirm the company’s commitment to sustainable mining practices and environmental stewardship. Boateng reiterated the company’s dedication to reforestation and biodiversity management, citing a comprehensive 10-year plan already in place.
Brown welcomed the new team and highlighted the Commission’s transition into a more active oversight phase, particularly focused on ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
He encouraged Zijin to maintain and deepen sustainable mining practices, which he said would benefit both the company and the country.
Zijin Mining Group, the parent company of ZGRL, is one of the world’s top five mining companies. Headquartered in China, the group operates in more than 15 countries and employs over 10,000 people across Africa. It is actively involved in the extraction of minerals such as copper, zinc, gold, lithium, and silver.
Reflecting on the Commission’s longstanding relationship with Newmont, Dr. Brown expressed optimism about future cooperation with Zijin, noting the scale of its operations. “Zijin is significantly larger, so we anticipate even greater achievements moving forward,” he remarked.
Highlighting past milestones, Boateng mentioned that under Newmont’s leadership, the Akyem Gold Mine exceeded its reforestation target by rehabilitating 357 hectares of land, surpassing its original goal of 303 hectares. He expressed confidence that under the new leadership of Zijin, even greater environmental gains would be realized.
The engagement marks a renewed commitment by both the Forestry Commission and Zijin to promote responsible mining while safeguarding Ghana’s forests and biodiversity.
