Youth “fleeing” Tema Manhean after clash with navy personnel

The police and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have commenced investigations into the clash between the youth of Tema Newtown and personnel of the Ghana Navy

Some youth in Tema Manhean are reportedly fleeing the town after a clash with some navy personnel last Friday (12 April).

At least two people were killed during Friday (12 April) evening’s clash.

The youth, as part of this year’s Kplejoo festival had embarked on a street procession and on arrival at the street in front of the Eastern Naval Command, a misunderstanding ensued between the youth and the naval ratings on duty.

In the process, a vehicle belonging the Navy was allegedly destroyed by some youth in the crowd.

Asaase Radio’s Elvis Andoh reports that the youth are mainly fleeing to neighbouring communities to avoid being picked up for questioning by security officials.

“Most of the youth have left because they fear they will be picked up to answer questions, so most have left for the neighbouring community,” he said.

However, speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (15 April), the Greater Accra Minister designate, Titus Glover said calm has returned to the area.

“For now there is total calm in Tema New Town, people are going around performing their duties without fear or favour.”

The Tema Metropolitan Security Council will be sitting this morning to look into the circumstances that led to the incident,” Glover said.
