CAS rejects International Boxing Association’s appeal after IOC withdrew recognition

The International Boxing Association’s (IBA) appeal against a decision to withdraw recognition of it being the sport’s international federation has been dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sports.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) in June 2023 stripped the IBA of recognition over its failure to complete reforms on governance, finance, and ethical issues and IBA took the appeal to the global sport’s court.

“The IOC session took its decision based on the recommendation issued by the IOC executive board on 7 June 2023 following a long process, initiated shortly after the Olympic Games Rio 2016,” the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said in a statement.

“During (the process) the IOC requested the IBA to undertake various measures to address serious concerns related to its governance and financial stability.”

It added that the IBA had not complied with the conditions set down by the IOC.

“The IBA had not increased its financial transparency and sustainability including through diversification of revenues (nor) changed its process relating to referees and judges to ensure its integrity,” CAS said.

Cas said the IBA had not made enough change in financial transparency, the integrity of officials and its culture.

Boxing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was organised by the IOC amid concerns over the IBA’s finance, governance, ethics, refereeing and judging.

The Olympic body will be in charge again for Paris 2024, but has no plans to do so for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

“The NOCs and national boxing federations thus hold the future of Olympic boxing in their own hands, and the required actions cannot be clearer,” the IOC said.

“At the moment, boxing is not on the sports programme for the Olympic Games LA28. In order to remedy this, the IOC needs to have a partner International Federation for boxing by early 2025.”
