John Boadu, the general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has chastised the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, for endangering Ghana’s security in a scramble to become “president at all costs”.
Addressing a news conference at the party’s headquarters on Tuesday, Boadu said Mahama’s action is an attempt to remain relevant in order to run for the presidency again in 2024.
“You cannot endanger the security of our country on the altar of your selfish interest, that will not be accepted, you cannot be a president at all costs,” he said.
Boadu added: “John Mahama is asking other people’s children to hit the streets for him to be candidate of the National Democratic Congress in 2024 whiles his children are locked up in comfort.”
Boadu condemned the action of the NDC flagbearer, advising the largest opposition party in Ghana to go to court to address their grievances.
He challenged the NDC to put out their presidential figures for the 7 December elections if they truly want to challenge the results.
Speak up
Boadu called on the various stakeholders including the National Peace Council to call the NDC flagbearer to order.
“Let the Ghanaian people speak up. The National Peace Council, the National House of Chiefs, civil society organisations: speak out and tell John Mahama that this country is bigger than his ego,” he told journalists.
The NPP general secretary urged Mahama to come to terms with the fact that he has lost the elections.
EC declaration
On Wednesday 9 December the chair of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, declared Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo the winner of the 2020 presidential election after he defeated Mahama of the National Democratic Congress.
Akufo-Addo won 51.59% of the total votes cast, against Mahama’s 6,214,889, a 47.36% vote share. Akufo-Addo polled a total of 6,730,413 votes out of the total 13,119,460, securing a majority of more than 517,000.
However, the NDC has since rejected the 2020 results, describing the election as full of irregularities in some parts of the country.
Mahama last week revealed the party will explore all legal avenues available to overturn the flawed elections.
