Conti-Katanga clash: Four KNUST rioters granted GHC200,000 bail each

The court, as part of the bail conditions, ordered the four persons accused of violence on the KNUST campus to present three sureties with one to be justified by a public officer

The four accused standing trial in connection with violence that broke out at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in August have been granted bail in the sum of GHC200,000 each.

The court, as part of the bail conditions for the four accused, ordered the students to present three sureties, with one to be justified by a public officer.

The four, who are facing the court on charges of rioting and causing unlawful damage, were remanded into police custody at the last adjourned date in court. They were arrested by the police even as the search for 62 individuals linked to the 18 August incident continues.

During proceedings on Thursday (13 October 2022), the court, presided over by Samuel Buabeng Quansah, shot down the prosecution’s attempt to keep the suspects in custody.

The judge consequently adjourned proceedings to 27 October.

What happened on 18 August?

A clash occurred between residents of University (Katanga) and Unity (Conti) Halls in which many were injured and much property was destroyed.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council has since stepped up security on KNUST campus as the hunt continues for the remaining suspects.

The university management also announced a raft of measures to curtail similar violence on campus, including the suspension of all hall and SRC Week activities.

Management has also scrapped the Junior Common Room system, a decision many have described as “draconian”.
