The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has clarified the circumstances that led to the suspension of work on the Nkawkaw Stadium Project.
Speaking on Asaase Radio’s Sports Bulletin, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah said that the project had to be halted because it was not authorised, citing the absence of the required documentation from the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong.
He emphasised that while the rehabilitation of the stadium is a positive initiative, due process must be followed to ensure transparency and compliance with regulations.
“The Nkawkaw project has been a challenge over the past decade; work hasn’t really gone on there due to several factors. So we have to get all the facts and get all the documents to make sure that we are up to date with the necessary legal situation.
“And that meant that we had to meet Bryan Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi, and we had a meeting with him in Accra. And after that there was a stakeholder meeting, and that also went reasonably well. He spoke very well. We have to give him credit for that. And currently we await the documentation from Honourable Bryan Acheampong,” he stated.
That’s where we are now; after guidance and counsel came suspension of the work because it was unauthorised. There was nothing; there was no documentation to say that this had been approved. So we were just following guidelines.” Yaw Ampofo Ankrah added.
The clarification comes amid growing public concern over delays on the much-anticipated facility, which is expected to serve as a major hub for sports development in the Eastern Region.
The Nkawkaw Stadium, once completed, is intended to host local football matches, athletics competitions, and other community sporting events.
Ampofo Ankrah added that the NSA remains committed to supporting all efforts aimed at improving sports infrastructure across the country but insisted that projects must follow established procedures to protect public interest.
