Yaw Ampofo Ankrah: Ghana’s sporting sector undergoing repositioning

Despite the substantial investment and attention football receives in Ghana, the director general of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, asserts that the sports sector is under performing

The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has stressed the urgent need for a national reset in Ghana’s sporting sector, describing its current condition as “wobbling” and long overdue for strategic reform.

In an exclusive interview on Asaase Radio‘s Team Talk show, Ankrah stated that Ghana’s sports ecosystem is undergoing a pivotal phase of repositioning, one that requires deliberate planning, sustained investment, and collective national commitment.

“Ghana’s sport is repositioning. That is why the reset agenda is so important. It begins with each and every one of us,” he stated. “We have suffered a lot of setbacks and have not had enough to celebrate. Occasionally, we do, but it has become a rare luxury.”

Despite the substantial investment and attention football receives in Ghana, Ankrah, asserts that the sports sector is under performing. He further cautioned that its progress should not obscure the broader challenges facing other sporting disciplines.

“I would not be ambitious if I say that football is doing great, given the opportunities, the platforms, and the support it enjoys to excel,” he said.

To address these imbalances and chart a sustainable future, Ankrah proposed the creation and implementation of a 10-year national sports development plan. He stressed that Ghana must move beyond short-term, reactionary policies and adopt a structured, long-term approach to sports growth.

He also emphasised the need for collaboration across sectors, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ghana Olympic Committee, various sports federations, private investors, and academic institutions.

His remarks come amid growing national discourse on the future of sports in Ghana, with increasing calls from stakeholders for structural reforms, targeted investment, and attention to underfunded disciplines.
