Ya Naa to Akufo-Addo: You’ve brought peace to Dagbon – we’ll support you

Ya Naa Abukari II says the Dagbon State will continue to support the Akufo-Addo government to succeed in its transformation agenda

The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya Naa Abukari II, has said the outstanding leadership qualities shown by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have brought peace to Dagbon and repositioned the ancient kingdom on a path of accelerated development.

Receiving the government delegation at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Friday (6 August 2021) at the beginning of the president’s two-day tour of the Northern Region, Ya Naa Abukari II declared: “The ability to facilitate the performance of the kingdom’s landmark funerals, leading to [my] enskinment, is a singular achievement that has won you [President Akufo-Addo] great trust in the minds of Ghanaians and Dagombas, to be precise.”

Consequently, the Ya Naa assured President Akufo-Addo: “The Gbewaa Palace will look forward to work with you in your second term to address the few remaining security threats to the Dagbon Traditional State.

“The Dagbon State, under my leadership, will continue to support your government to succeed and provide quality and principled leadership for our region and country, to make Ghana a better place.”

Naa Abukari II recognised “the fact that certain individuals continue to undermine your efforts through spoiler behaviours and machinations”. Nonetheless, he said, the Dagbon Traditional Council has launched a development fund, focusing on key areas for socio-economic development, to enable Dagbon to unleash its potential and spur the economic development of the kingdom at large.

Flagship programmes

Commending the president for his strong leadership during his first term in office, which culminated in the implementation of many flagship programmes, from Planting for Food and Jobs to Free Senior High School to One District, One Factory, the Ya Naa said that “these people-centred policies and programmes have won you the admiration of many Ghanaians”.

On the specific growth of Dagbon through the Northern Development Authority, the Ya Naa said: “The tremendous attention you gave to the birth of the Northern Development Authority, the subsequent sod-cutting of Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam, and the Tamale Interchange are sufficient steps to leave a great legacy for northern development.”

While commending the government for the US$30 million Yendi Water Supply Project, he appealed to President Akufo-Addo to encourage the relevant water sector agencies and contractors on the project to speed up the process to end the periodic water crises in Yendi.

The Ya-Naa equally applauded efforts by the MP for Yendi, Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, towards helping to end the water crisis in Yendi, speaking of his “great and timely intervention in the supply of potable drinking water through the construction of boreholes in some parts of the constituency” along the Eastern Corridor road.

To help combat the threat of desertification, the Ya Naa announced: “I personally have an initiative on afforestation dubbed ‘Naa Bukali Green Dagbon Project’, which I intend to roll out. This project shall not only help in making Dagbon Kingdom green again but also help in greening Ghana in general.”

Promoting reconciliation

For his part, President Akufo-Addo thanked the Ya Naa for his warm reception, adding: “It is a matter of great delight for me to see you sitting on this ancient skin over a united Dagbon. It is something that we have dreamt about for years, but today it is a reality.”

To this end, he told the Ya Naa that he has decided to appoint Farouk Aliu Mahama, the MP for Yendi, as board chairman of the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC).

“I want you to know that the relationship that we have begun is going to go stronger and stronger and stronger,” the president told Ya Naa Abukari.
