Reducing rice import: BoG must play a crucial role, says Dwuma Odoom

Statistics reveals about 60% of the rice consumed in Ghana is imported, which amounts to about US$391 million annually

Abraham Dwuma Odoom, policy advisor, Competitive Rice Initiative has questioned Ghana’s inability to make progress in reducing rice import into the country.

Statistics reveals about 60% of the rice consumed in Ghana is imported, which amounts to about US$391 million annually.

Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (27 November), Odoom said the Bank of Ghana must play a crucial role in ensuring that the country significantly reduces rice importation.

“Competitive African rice initiative was done in Ghana, Burkina Faso, Tanzania  and Nigeria. I happened to be in Nigeria, and we got to where we got, so the question is why Ghana has taken so long to be out of the woods,” he said.

“In Nigeria, we were successful because of the central bank,” he said. “We held meetings with the central bank and all the commercial banks, where has that thing gone to, along the line I wasn’t getting invitation, so the whole thing fizzled out.”

“Meanwhile, I hold a strong view that the central bank of Ghana can play a major role,” Odoom added.
