William Amponsah shatters national 3000m indoor record

Ghanaian long-distance star beats Sampson Laari's 2017 record by 3.21 seconds

Ghanaian long-distance star William Amponsah blazed to a new national indoor record in the 3000m run at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The prestigious event, held at the Robert W. Plaster Centre in Pittsburg, USA, witnessed Amponsah rewrite the history books on 9 March, 2024.

Competing for Texas A&M University, Amponsah clocked a blistering 8:02.67 in the Men’s 3000m final, eclipsing the nearly decade-old record of 8:05.88 previously held by Sampson Laari.

Despite his record-breaking performance, Amponsah missed the podium, finishing in a respectable 6th place, 5.5 seconds behind champion Simon Kelati of Western Colorado University.

This impressive feat further cements Amponsah’s status as a rising star in Ghanaian athletics. The 24-year-old is a member of Team Ghana and will be a strong contender in the upcoming half-marathon at the 13th African Games in Accra.
