AMVCA: Ghana’s Ayebea Darko wins “Best Unscripted Series”

This award not only validates Darko's work on screen but also serves as a foreign co-sign that shows that she is on the right path

Ghanaian-produced reality show hit GH Queens has earned its first Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMCVA) for Best Unscripted Series.

This is a monumental achievement for producer, Ayebea Darko, as it is the first Ghanaian reality show to earn this nomination since the inception of the AMVCA in 2013.

This award not only validates Darko’s work on screen but also serves as a foreign co-sign that shows that she is on the right path.

Ayebea Darko, the daughter of the CEO of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Delese Darko, was also responsible for the stage visuals for Afrochella in 2018 and 2019, as well as the “London to Lagos” installation at Detty Rave in 2018.

In an exclusive interview with African Female Voices, Darko said the first season of GH Queens was quite challenging.

“I worked with a team of 40-plus-year-old men from a production company who were new to this type of reality TVWe had to build from the ground up, starting with basic references to ensure they understood the timing and other critical aspects of the genre.

“Editing was particularly tough because it required a grasp of comedic timing and maintaining the right tempo. I’ll admit, I ended up being heavily involved in the editing process, almost doing it all myself,” she said.

Darko said she is excited about the possibility of making a third season of “GH Queens”, adding “But as I have learned, you must first get your financial house in order. While I’m taking a brief break, I’m not stepping away completely.”

Darko has also developed a new app, #womenintech to serve as a platform to hire creative staff, equipment, and spaces.

“One exciting new project is an app I’ve developed  #womenintech, which we plan to launch this summer.”

It’s designed to serve all of Africa, especially Ghana, by providing a platform to hire creative staff, equipment, and spaces.”

She added, “Having been in the industry for years and still receiving calls for resources like specific cameras or models, I saw a need for a tool that consolidates these services to support the Ghanaian creative ecosystem. My main mission is to elevate Ghana to be among the top three African countries striving for global creative success.”

It’s part of my master plan to ensure we can compete internationally and not be overshadowed by other African nations. Additionally, I’m exploring producing other shows; I have a few ideas in the pipeline. I’ve found that taking time to breathe is crucial—it’s when you gain clarity, Darko added.
