Who wins the 2025 Ghana School of Law SRC presidency?

Overall, there are five positions up for grabs in the upcoming Ghana School of Law SRC elections, which will be held on 29 and 30 April 2025

Students of the Ghana School of Law (GSL), the only institution authorized by law to train legal professionals in the country, will in the next 21 days, go to the polls to elect a new president for the Students Representative Council (SRC), as well as Vice Presidents, and other executives.

Most GSL students have largely described the 2025 Students Representative Council race as competitive, time-consuming for the contestants, and characterized by innovative campaign styles and approaches. Some have even wondered how the candidates are balancing their studies with their campaign endeavours.

Others have also observed that some candidates have and continue to spend a significant amount of money on their campaigns due to the models they have chosen to run their campaigns. There are speculations that some of the candidates are being sponsored by the two leading political parties in the country, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Overall, there are five positions up for grabs in the upcoming GSL SRC elections, which will be held on Tuesday, April 29, and Wednesday, April 30, 2025, on all four campuses of the GSL. The positions are President, Vice President (4 slots), General Secretary, Organizing Secretary, and Treasurer. There will also be the election of congressmen.

However, because the GSL has four campuses — Accra Main (Makola), Greenhill (GIMPA), UPSA (Accra), and Kumasi (KNUST) — each campus will elect a Vice President, making the positions contested for eight instead of five.

Presidential race

There are five persons who have been vetted and approved by the Electoral Commission of the GSL to contest in the upcoming elections. They are Michael Obiri-Adjei (ObiriCares), who is said to have obtained the highest score among all the candidates after the vetting process, Benjamin Ofei-Addo (Solutions That Matter), Festus Tetteh Matey (Team Work), Emmanuella Tetteh Ashong (Ɔbaa no), the only female in the contest, and Nana Opoku Ware (The Time is NOW).

Declaration of intent

The five candidates, after the GSL EC opened for nominations, picked up forms and filed them, declaring their intent to contest in the elections. Through the declaration of intent, they shared their motivation for seeking the lead the GSL SRC for the 2025/2026 academic year.

Michael Obiri-Adjei

“I am Michael Obiri-Adjei, a Part 1 student at the Ghana School of Law. In the last few months, I have had the pleasant experience of interacting with you. As a consequence of our interactions, we have discussed matters of our collective welfare and initiated advocacy where needed. Out of these discussions, I have decided to respond to the clarion call of duty.

“It is, therefore, a privilege for me to formally announce my intention to put myself forward for your service as your next SRC PRESIDENT. I shall submit a manifesto, which shall be a product of listening to you and a response to the matters we have raised throughout our engagements. I am relentless in my pursuit of an SRC that works in our best interest. Together, we shall achieve this. Let us put our best foot forward,” Michael’s declaration of intent read.

Benjamin Offei-Addo

“With humility and a sense of duty, I, Benjamin Offei-Addo, officially declare my intent to run to become the SRC President of the Ghana School of Law for the 2025/2026 academic year.

“Your trust in my genuine approach, clarity of thought, strength in advocacy, and practical solutions has inspired me to serve. After extensive engagements, reflection, and prayer, I am ready to lead.

“Having engaged with you across all four campuses, our manifesto will reflect our shared aspirations. With you, I will provide a leadership that delivers Solutions that matter for the SRC, built on Relevance, Practicality, and Sustainability. Together, let us build an SRC that delivers an optimal student experience,” Benjamin Offei-Addo’s declaration of intent read.

Emmanuella Tetteh Ashong

“I stand before you not only as a candidate for SRC President, but also as a fellow student who is deeply committed to enhancing our law school experience for everyone.

“Our journey through law school is demanding, but together, we can build a community where every student feels heard, supported, and empowered to succeed.

“My vision is clear: to lead with integrity, transparency, and accountability, ensuring that your concerns are addressed and your interests are protected,” Ms Tetteh Ashong’s resolve to contest read.

Festus Tetteh Matey

“Throughout the preceding months, you have graciously allowed me to assist you in a multitude of ways. I have also been fortunate enough to engage with many seniors and colleagues, exchanging thoughts regarding the future of our SRC.

“Starting today, I will formally begin the process of running for the position of SRC President, as I aspire to become your Chief Servant in the upcoming SRC Administration. This journey is one that we will embark on together. With you and for you, Victory is assured,” Tetteh Matey’s resolution indicated.

Nana Opoku Ware

“Today, I take the first step towards availing myself to your service as your next SRC PRESIDENT. Over the past few weeks, I have engaged with each campus, sparking cogent conversations about the state of our fraternity.

“In doing so, it has been demonstrated that the welfare of students is at the forefront of this campaign, commensurate with the various projects implemented within this short period.

“Today, I call for your support and votes, urging all of us to join in this paradigm shift from promises to action as we take a step further. A step that brightens the future of our short stay in this noble Law School and shapes our future in the legal profession. Together, we can achieve great things,” Nana Opoku Ware’s expression of interest posited.

Key campaign activities

Beyond the sharing of cakes by Obiri, distribution of chocolates by Benji, hosting of a  brunch by Opoku Ware, Zeno’s bar by Festus, all on Vals day, roll-up banners, digital displays, and social media advertising that students of the GSL have been inundated with, the five candidates have also been carrying out various activities aimed at winning the hearts and votes of GSL students.

Micheal Obiri Adjei, for example, has rolled out his Obiri cares programme, offering free branded water to all students on all four campuses of the Ghana School of Law. He also organizes extra classes for all interested students of the GSL.

Benjamin Offei-Addo has leveraged his background as a chartered accountant to compile audio-visual tutorial lectures on legal accounting for all his part one colleagues who may be struggling with the study of legal accounting.

Nana Opoku Ware, beyond repairing broken-down chairs at the UPSA campus, has also provided Starlink internet services for all GSL students across all four campuses, promising to maintain the same should he be elected as SRC President.

Festus Tetteh Matey has also leveraged on his friendship with other lawyers to organize tutorial sessions for all interested students, mostly on weekends. He has also taken it upon himself to supply microwaves to some campuses on the GSL.

Emmanuella Tetteh Ashong, on the other hand, has kept a low profile, opting for a one-on-one approach in her campaign. In recent times, she has heavily promoted her candidacy on various social media platforms where GSL students are active.

High expectations

Expectations are high in the 2025 Ghana School of Law (GSL) Student Representative Council (SRC) presidential elections, and as the campaign season draws to a close, the presidential candidates are expected to intensify their campaign activities in their quest to secure votes.

Among the five candidates Michael Obiri-Adjei (ObiriCares), Benjamin Ofei-Addo (Nea Onnim No Sua a Ohu), Festus Tetteh Matey (Here for You), Emmanuella Tetteh Ashong (Ɔbaa no), the only female in the contest, and Nana Opoku Ware (the time is NOW), who will emerge as the winner of the election, your guess is as good as mine!
