WHO supplies Ghana with 10,000 vials of antibiotics for meningitis

The donation of antibiotics was handed over at a brief ceremony in the Ministry of Health (MoH) conference room in Accra on Tuesday (18 February 2025)

The government’s efforts to contain the ongoing meningitis outbreak in the Upper West Region have received a major boost with a donation of 10,000 vials of antibiotics from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The donation was officially handed over during a brief ceremony in the Ministry of Health (MoH) conference room in Accra on Tuesday (18 February 2025).

During the presentation, the WHO country representative in Ghana, Frank Lule, stressed the crucial role the medicines would play in the fight against meningitis.

He urged residents in the affected areas to seek early medical treatment, stressing that timely intervention could save lives.

Dr Lule also assured Ghanaian officials that WHO remains committed to supporting Ghana and will provide additional medical supplies if necessary.

Technical assistance

Receiving the donation on behalf of the government and people of Ghana, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, expressed deep gratitude for the timely intervention.

He commended WHO for its continued support in strengthening Ghana’s health-care system and promptly handed over the antibiotics to the acting director general of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea.

Professor Akoriyea assured the minister and WHO representatives that the medicines would be despatched immediately to the Upper West Region to support the treatment of patients.

He also praised WHO’s swift technical assistance in responding to the outbreak, noting that such collaborations were vital in tackling public health emergencies.

The donation ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Health, WHO Ghana and Ghana Health Service, as well as members of the media.

The support from WHO is expected to enhance Ghana’s response efforts to the latest outbreak of infectious disease significantly and reduce fatalities caused by it.
