1,000 girls in Bono East mentored in digital skills

The mentorship event was part of activities under the 'Girls in ICT' programme by the communications ministry to train a total of 5,000 school girls in 2022

The Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation has trained and mentored a total of 1,000 school girls in the Bono East region in digital skills.

The mentorship programme was part of activities under the ‘Girls in ICT‘ programme by the ministry to train a total of 5,000 school girls in 2022.

The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful during the mentorship programme in Techiman encouraged the girls to take a cue in the global digitalisation move in order to keep pace with their male counterparts.

“From all the evidence that we have, girls are relegated as far as ICT is concerned. So it is important that we encourage them and let them know that it is doable,” she said.

Owusu-Ekuful explained the significance of ICT tools and pledged the government’s commitment making them available to students at all levels, particularly the vulnerable to prepare them for the future.

“ICT will be needed in all fields of work that we are doing as a people. The world is moving at a much faster pace that even if you want to be a mechanic or just a driver, you will need ICT and digital education”.

She encouraged the girls to take the ICT training very seriously, adding “the government will do its best to equip you and make available ICT centres in most parts of the country, so that we can all benefit from the internet revolution”.

The women mentors who were brought from the academia, health, and business fields encouraged the girls to take advantage of the programme to further enhance their education in computer science and other ICT education.

The mentors included, Dr Mercy Badu, a lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Juanita Ahia Quarcoo, a lecturer at the Sunyani Technical University and Faiza Umar Bawa, a lecturer at the University of Energy and Natural resources among others.
