Savannah Region: Teacher jailed seven years for sodomy
The accused person had earlier pleaded guilty to all the charges leveled against him and was granted bail on Thursday, 4 November 2021
The Tamale Circuit Court has sentenced a 32-year-old social studies teacher, Natogmah Yamousa Otabil, to seven years in prison with hard labour for sodomising 18 students of Kulpi Junior High School.
Otabil was arrested in September last year by the Salaga police following a report by parents of the students to the East Gonja Municipal Education Director.
The accused person had earlier pleaded guilty to all the charges levelled against him and was granted bail on Thursday, 4 November 2021.
His case was later transferred to the Tamale Circuit Court from the Salaga Magistrate Court for lack of jurisdiction, where he made his first appearance.
The defence lawyer requested a psychiatric assessment to be carried out at the Pantan Hospital, which the court granted them.
The presiding judge rejected the results from the Pantang Hospital, leading to a second examination at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
Until the judgment on Tuesday (9 August 2022), the case was adjourned several times for different reasons.
