The National Road Safety Authority in the Northeast Region has started a sensitisation campaign in the region to engage road users on the need to reduce road crashes during this festive season.
The move taken by the NRSA is to engage drivers, riders, gas cylinder users, and all road users on the need to observe and follow road traffic rules and regulations to stay alive in the lead up to the New Year.
Speaking during the sensitisation campaign at the chief palace in Walewale, the North East regional director of the National Road Safety Authority, Patrick Osei-Tutu urged the drivers and motor riders to be mindful of speed limits and road signs.
“We are therefore urging our drivers, yellow-yellow riders, motor king riders, and motorcycle riders to reduce their speed and stay within the speed limit the law requires.
“The maximum speed limit for motorists on highways is 90Kph – kilometers per hour- 50Kph in towns and settlements, and 30kph within a school, a playground, a health facility, a church, mosque, market, a shopping center or where human activity is predominant,” Osei-Tutu said.
He said that the region from January 2023 to October 2023 recorded 33 crashes, 77 injuries, and 25 deaths as compared to same period last year, where the region recorded 48 road crashes, 64 injuries, and 20 deaths.
Present at the sensitisation campaign are representatives from the Ghana National Fire Service, the ambulance service, the MTTD, and other stakeholders in the municipality.
