Bushfire has destroyed over 40 acres of maize farm belonging to Issahak Arimeyaw Bansintale Somo Lucky, the municipal chief executive for the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.
The police are investigating the incident and on the lookout for possible suspects.
Somo Lucky has condemned the act and called on the public to be cautious when burning on their farms at this time of the year.
He said the assembly will intensify education against bush burning in the municipality.
“We have been sensitising people about bushfires but it seems people are still not paying attention. It is pathetic,” he told Asaase News.
Somo Lucky also appealed to the chiefs in the area to support the assembly to fight bush burning in the region.
“I just want to appeal to our chiefs, especially, Mba Kpanaa who I know very well. He is a man of discipline, a man of respect, to also educate our people on bush burning,” he said.
In 2021, torrential rains destroyed the same farm.
Over the years, bushfires have been destroying farms in the North East Region in the dry season despite efforts by local authorities including the Ghana National Fire Service to educate farmers about best practices.
The fires are mostly caused by hunters, smokers and charcoal burners.
