We’re spending more on treating water due to pollution, says GWCL

The MD of Ghana Water Company Limited Dr Clifford Braimah says pollution of river bodies is taking a huge financial toll on its operations

Dr Clifford Braimah, the MD of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has said the company is spending more on treating water due to heavy pollution of the Densu River in the Weija catchment area.

Parts of the country have in recent times been experiencing water rationing due to the impact of polluted water on the infrastructure of the GWCL.

“Apart from the galamsey, let’s just go to Weija, they are not doing mining there, but you realise that the lake is within a built area, now you look at all the banks of Weija, you see settlements, how are people managing the waste from their homes,” Braimah said on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (6 April).

“And I can tell you that just about two years ago, we were using 200 bags of aluminium sulphate to treat water in Weija, today we are using 300,” he told Kwaku Nhyira-Addo.

“If you go there, you can see the water is greenish, some organic activities are taking place, so these are the problems, sometimes they get our nuzzles plugged, you have to keep washing them and pushing them and if they get clogged, then the infrastructure fails, and once they fail, you have to reduce production,” he added.

He called for the establishment of taskforce to check pollution at water bodies along the Densu River.
