Ghanaian musician Frank Nii Okai Tagoe, popularly known as Perez Musik, has revealed that he struggled with substance abuse before he found God.

“So I think somewhere along the line, I used to party, drink, smoke and chase girls. I battled with some form of addiction at the time. I believe the grace of God helped me overcome it,” he told Asaase Radio.

Talking to Naa Ashorkor on Between Hours on Wednesday (2 March), he said: “I think in JHS, at a point when the youthful exuberance and so much adrenaline settled, you want to let it out, you want to explore, you want to do things. There was a point I couldn’t stop drinking, there was a point I couldn’t stop smoking, no matter how hard I tried.”

The hitmaker of Blemaa Tesaa said it took the grace of God to quit his addictions, adding: “There was a genuine desire to quit because I had come to a point where I had explored everything, done all the bad boy things I could do.”

“There was no satisfaction in that for me, there was a constant yearning to do more, so I sort out to seek God. I found him and I’m glad and it’s been beautiful,” Perez Musik said.

 Blemaa Tesaa

According to Perez Musik, the Holy Spirit inspired his 2019 hit sing Blemaa Tesaa.

“I was led by the Holy Spirit to make the song, but I think it was inspired by an experience I had prior. I was at a point of standstill, things were not moving well for me.”

Perez added that he went on a wait with God and locked himself in his room for about a week seeking the face of God.

“I was praying and fasting, I was in my room all throughout the seven days. I decided to just fellowship and I believed that during that period something changed.

“I felt like I hit something up in the spirit, the evidence was seen in my song, and after that anytime I go to church and lead praise and worship people walk up to me to tell me something has changed about my ministration.

“The fellowship brought a turn around in my life. I made a personal choice to also stop watching TV also. I just decided to starve myself of TV to be able to connect better, and it’s helped me in a way because I used to spend a lot of time watching TV, so I needed to give that up,” Perez Musik told Naa Ashorkor.
