Over the weekend, the Wenchi West District of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, part of the Mid West Ghana Conference in the Bono Region, honoured 20 young girls for their commitment to preserving their virginity.
In recognition of their dedication, the girls were awarded undisclosed amounts of money for their upkeep.
Nana Amponsah Poku, District Coordinator of the Young Adventist Women Ministries, lauded the girls for their decision to remain virgins and encouraged them to continue doing so until marriage.
“Empowering young girls with the belief that God created them uniquely, beautiful, and worthy of love gives them the confidence to choose their friends and activities wisely,” Poku said.
She highlighted the ministry’s focus on nurturing young girls into responsible, well-rounded adults, stressing that the church is dedicated to guiding them through life’s challenges.
Poku also took the opportunity to discuss the Bragoro/Dipo rite, a Ghanaian cultural tradition historically used to teach adolescent girls values in preparation for marriage.
She explained that the rite has been adapted into a Christian practice, with virgin girls now presented to the Lord for blessings.
Andrews Dua Bour Kyereh, Associate Pastor of Wenchi West District, congratulated the girls on their commitment to purity and urged others, both within the church and beyond, to prioritise education while upholding moral values.
The young girls expressed heartfelt gratitude to their church leaders for their continuous support and encouragement, vowing to uphold their purity.
They also called on church leaders to persist in promoting the well-being of young girls, emphasising the importance of fostering a community rooted in Christ’s teachings.
