The Wenchi Municipal Assembly has inaugurated a 20-member committee to spearhead the Ghana Smart SDGs Cities Programme, marking a major step towards building a more sustainable, inclusive, and data-driven city.
The committee, chaired by the municipal chief executive for Wenchi, Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, forms part of the broader Ghana Smart SDGs Cities Programme. Supported by the Government of Norway through UN-Habitat, the national initiative empowers selected assemblies to create resilient and environmentally friendly urban centres.
The programme aims to localise the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by leveraging digital tools, spatial data, and participatory governance. It seeks to improve service delivery, address urban challenges, and enhance climate resilience in municipalities across the country.
Speaking at the inauguration, Opoku Gyamfi expressed excitement about Wenchi’s selection among ten cities nationwide, describing it as a significant milestone and a step in the right direction.
“We are proud to be part of this forward-looking initiative. The establishment of this committee is a critical step toward transforming Wenchi into a model smart city where development is driven by data, innovation, and inclusive participation,” she stated.
She urged committee members to embrace their roles with commitment and transparency to help reshape Wenchi’s future.
“Our collective efforts today will lay the foundation for a better Wenchi tomorrow. Let us remain focused and dedicated to building a city that meets the aspirations of both current and future generations,” she added.
