Government launches “re/start” initiative to train 10,000 youths in emerging technology
The initiative is in line with the government’s agenda to equip the working force with 21st-century skills
The government through the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (GI-KACE) has officially launched an initiative to train young people in digital skills leading to career paths in emerging technologies as well as increasing digital technology competence among the youth.
Known as ‘re/start’ the initiative is in line with the government’s agenda to equip the working force with 21st-century skills.
Already some 120 youth from Accra and Sunyani have benefited from ‘re/start’ before the launch.
The first phase of the programme involves 1,550 people who will be trained with digital skills to enhance their career paths in emerging technologies.
Speaking with Emmanuel Aboagye-Waife at the launch of the initiative, the director general of the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, Dr Collins Yeboah-Afari said, “… We hope to train 10,000 youths, unemployed and others who may have the need to change careers but this first phase which is ending in April will train 1550 individuals”.
“… We think that people need a boost so what we are doing here is to create an enabling environment for Ghanaian youth and entrepreneurs to thrive in the global technology ecosystem through digital skilling and hopefully it will increase the digital competence among the youths…”
The re/start’ initiative is supported by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation and the World Bank.
Established 20 years ago, the GI-KACE core mandate includes delivery of globally benchmarked training, core technical research leading to innovations for Information Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D) solutions; provision of consulting services as well as managing key networks and events for the IT community in Ghana and West Africa.
