Weapons recovered as police foil robbery, kill four suspects in Ashanti Region

The Regional Police Command said the confrontation took place on 12 April near Sanfo-Aduam, where the suspects had allegedly planned to rob a mining site

Four suspected armed robbers have been shot dead in a police operation in Ashanti South Region, following a series of violent attacks targeting mining communities and travelers.

The Regional Police Command said the confrontation took place on 12 April near Sanfo-Aduam, where the suspects had allegedly planned to rob a mining site.

Acting on intelligence, a team from the regional Anti-Robbery Unit intercepted the suspects — believed to be part of a notorious gang linked to multiple attacks in the Fomena and Dompoase areas.

According to the police, the five-man gang, armed with an AK-47 and pump-action shotguns, arrived at the targeted site in a Kia Picanto taxi. Officers reportedly ordered them to surrender, but the suspects opened fire, prompting the police to return fire.

Four of the suspects were fatally wounded in the exchange and later pronounced dead at the Bekwai Government Hospital. A fifth suspect is said to be in critical condition and under police guard.

Authorities say the group was responsible for a string of armed robberies in recent months, including attacks on miners, a rural bank, and private residences — many of which resulted in serious injuries and theft of gold concentrates and cash.

During the latest operation, police recovered the AK-47 rifle stolen during an earlier robbery, along with two pump-action guns, live ammunition, and spent cartridges.

The Ashanti South Regional Commander, ACP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, commended his officers for their bravery and assured the public of continued efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the region.

“We are determined to restore calm and ensure the safety of residents and businesses,” he said during a press briefing in Asante Bekwai on Monday (14 April).

The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to support their efforts by sharing credible information to help combat criminal activity.
