A group of candidates in Ghana’s upcoming Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) elections has raised concerns over the introduction of proxy voting, accusing the Election Committee of failing to consult aspirants before making the decision.
In a joint statement issued on Monday, 24 June, the candidates described the move as “undemocratic and detrimental to the transparency of the electoral process.”
“We, the undersigned candidates in the ongoing GJA electoral process, write to express our deep concern regarding the issue of proxy voting in a press statement issued by the Election Committee without our knowledge. As key stakeholders in this election, we believe that the principles of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity must guide every step of the process,” the statement read.
The candidates said the decision to introduce proxy voting without consultation “undermines trust in the process” and runs counter to the democratic values the GJA is expected to uphold. They called for the immediate suspension of the arrangement, citing precedent from the previous GJA elections.
“We have observed a growing trend where major decisions, some of which have significant implications for the integrity and credibility of the elections, are being taken without any form of engagement or prior notice to candidates,” they added.
In addition to opposing proxy voting, the candidates also raised concerns about the current state of the voters register, which they described as “potentially bloated.” They urged the Election Committee to act swiftly to clean the register and protect the integrity of the elections.
The candidates reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful, fair, and credible electoral process but emphasised the need for greater transparency and consultation going forward.
The GJA elections are scheduled for Monday, 30 June 2025, with 13 national and 49 regional candidates cleared to contest various leadership positions within the Association.
