The embattled general secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Atik Mohammed, is pushing for the establishment of a policy framework on managing the economy.
He argues that this will put political parties in a better position to implement their vision and allow citizens a far more equal right to access the views of citizens.
“For me, the most important policy that should guide our politicians, or the policy framework that I am interested in reading and reviewing, is one on managing our economy, because infrastructure and all others are a subset from that,” he said.
Robust management strategy
Mohammed was in conversation with Nana Yaa Mensah on the Asaase Breakfast Show, discussing the imminent launch of election-year manifestoes by Ghana’s two leading political parties – the New Patriotic Party and National Democratic Congress.
“Politicians tend to believe the electorate vote based on what they see, so that is why there is this craze and raze about which political party had the most infrastructure during its tenure in office,” he said.
“If you have a management strategy which is robust, you will be able to fund your education and other policies, because at the end of the day all the things we propose and want to do are all about revenue and expenditure,” he said.
Mohammed said he prefers to look forward to manifestoes which guide him with an economic framework that focuses on infrastructure, security and education.
“Impracticable”
He also questioned the recent promise by the NDC flagbearer, John Mahama, to inject roughly US$10 billion into infrastructure development if elected.
“You want to inject $10 billion within four years. That is impracticable.
“You are intending or hoping to spend money which is more than your GDP. So, that is why the framework is relevant,” Mohammed insisted.
