We don’t want a democracy that is one-sided, says Rasheed Draman

The ACEPA executive director's comments follow the NDC's boycott of the vetting process for the deputy minister-designate for trade and industry, Kofi Ahenkorah

Rasheed Draman, Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), has questioned whether decisions passed by parliament without the participation of the minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) would hold weight.

Draman raised these concerns on Asaase Radio’s Big Bulletin on Tuesday (2 July). “We don’t want a democracy that is one-sided; that’s not what we voted for,” he said. “The people in the House can go ahead and make decisions but honestly, would that have legitimacy?”

The ACEPA Executive Director’s comments follow the NDC’s boycott of the vetting process for the deputy minister-designate for Trade and Industry, Kofi Ahenkorah, scheduled for Tuesday (2 July). This occurred as Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson was summoned for a court hearing in the ongoing ambulance case.

The Minority had already announced their intention to ignore parliamentary businesses on days their leader, Ato Forson, is summoned to court for a hearing.

Draman suggested that a one-sided parliament wouldn’t serve the interests of either party. “They themselves (the majority) will not feel comfortable if the decision is one-sided,” he argued.

He called for leadership intervention, urging the majority, minority, and speaker to “try and see what is the best way to resolve this issue.” Draman highlighted the perception of a “witch hunt” against the minority, fueled by recent leaks, and the need to restore confidence in the legal process.
