WAEC cancels 895 results, withholds 1,333 in 2025 BECE over malpractice

West African Examinations Council (WAEC)/WASSCE/Kumasi zonal office

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with nearly 2,300 candidates affected by sanctions for malpractice.

A total of 603,328 candidates — 297,250 boys and 306,078 girls — from 20,395 schools sat the exams at 2,237 centres nationwide. According to WAEC, 2,526 pupils were absent.

In a statement signed by John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs, WAEC confirmed that following investigations into irregularities during the exams and the marking of scripts, the 36th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee approved several punitive measures.

These include:

  • Cancellation of subject results for 718 candidates
  • Cancellation of entire results for 177 candidates
  • Withholding of subject results for 1,240 candidates
  • Withholding of entire results for 93 candidates

This brings the total number of cancelled results to 895, with another 1,333 withheld pending further investigation.

WAEC also said subject results from 119 schools had been cancelled, while results from 87 schools remain under scrutiny. The final decision on the withheld results will be announced by 6 September.

Candidates whose results have been affected can log onto irreg.waec.org or use the withheld/cancelled results option on the WAEC website to check the reasons and next steps.

The Council warned students and parents against fraudsters who claim they can alter results for a fee, stressing that its systems are secure and tamper-proof.

Special needs candidates also took part in this year’s exams, including 72 with visual impairments, 239 with hearing impairments, and 161 with other challenges.

WAEC expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, security agencies, invigilators and examiners for their support during the conduct of the exams and the release of the results.
