Vote for NPP this time round, Akufo-Addo urges voters in Kpone Katamanso

President Akufo-Addo appeals to residents of Kpone Katamanso to change their pattern of backing the NDC and to vote NPP in December

President Akufo-Addo has made a passionate appeal to residents of Kpone Katamanso in the eastern part of the Greater Accra Region to change their historical pattern of voting for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and, this time round, to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 7 December 2020 general election.

The president made this call as he addressed the chiefs and people of the constituency at a ceremony to cut the sod for building work on a 40-bed municipal hospital for Kpone.

Since the coming into force of the 1992 constitution, which launched the Fourth Republic, there have been seven elections. In all seven, Kpone Katamanso has voted for the NDC. President Akufo-Addo urged that in the December 2020 election, which will be the eighth in the series, Kpone Katamanso ought to consider the NPP.

The president said the sod-cutting ceremony represents another important milestone in the government’s commitment to guaranteeing access to health care for all Ghanaians, by improving existing health-care facilities and building new clinics and hospitals in parts of the country where none exist.

The president told the gathering that the government has secured funding towards the construction and equipping of 12 hospitals across Ghana, with the associated staff accommodation for hospital workers. Kpone is one of the 12 beneficiary communities.

A sum of €75.5 million has been secured from Erste Group Bank AG and Česká Spořitelna AS towards the construction and equipping of the new hospitals. The facility is covered by an export credit guarantee of €8.612 million from EGAP, the state-run export credit agency of the Czech Republic.

12 hospitals in 24 months

The hospital will be built by VAMED Engineering GmbH of Austria, a global leader in construction of health-care facilities. The other beneficiary communities are Achiase, Adukrom, Jumapo, Kwabeng and Nkwatia in the Eastern Region; Drobonso, Manso Nkwanta, Sabronum, Suame and Twedie in the Ashanti Region; and Mim in the Ahafo Region.

The 12 projects are expected to be completed in 24 months. The start of work on these projects, President Akufo-Addo said, serves as further evidence of his government’s commitment to achieving the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and universal health coverage for Ghanaians.

On completion, the Kpone Municipal Hospital will be fitted with staff offices, an outpatient department, a public health wing, a surgical suite consisting of a theatre, recovery ward and sterilisation unit, a delivery unit and neonatal intensive-care unit (NICU), a laboratory, a pharmacy, an X-ray department, beds for male and female adult and paediatric patients, a services block containing a laundry, stores and cold room, and staff accommodation.

Other components of the project package include supply and installation of medical equipment, one-year post-completion warranty and maintenance, and a training component for staff.

Jobs for local people

The president urged the contractor, VAMED Engineering, to work assiduously and ensure that the project is delivered on time and on budget.

He added that he expected VAMED to employ people from Kpone during the construction period.

Niimεi, I am delighted and honoured by your presence here, and I assure you that this project is a sign of greater things to come for Kpone and, indeed, for the whole nation. The government’s commitment to the total development of Ghana is absolute,” he said.
