Volvo to cut 800 U.S. Jobs as Trump-Era tariffs hit hard

Volvo announces it will lay off up to 800 U.S. workers, citing the impact of renewed tariffs on Chinese imports under Trump's trade policies.

Volvo Cars announced plans on April 18, 2025, to cut up to 800 jobs at its U.S. operations, pointing to the financial strain caused by tariffs imposed on Chinese auto parts under former President Donald Trump’s revived trade policies.

The layoffs will primarily affect the company’s manufacturing plant in South Carolina, where a significant portion of Volvo’s vehicles for the U.S. market are assembled.

In a company statement, Volvo said the decision was “difficult but necessary” due to increased operational costs from new import tariffs. The Swedish automaker, owned by China’s Geely, noted that the tariffs are forcing companies like Volvo to reassess their supply chains and production strategies in the United States.

Industry experts suggest this move could be the beginning of broader disruptions within the U.S. automotive sector if trade tensions escalate further.

Volvo said it remains committed to its U.S. operations but urged policymakers to find long-term solutions that support competitiveness in the American manufacturing space.

The announcement adds a political dimension to the ongoing debate around protectionism, trade policy, and the future of U.S. industrial jobs.
