Veteran Ghanaian broadcaster Tommy Annan-Forson has highlighted the unique power of the human voice in radio, warning against over-reliance on artificial intelligence in the media industry.
His reflections came during a conversation on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (13 February) on World Radio Day, a day that celebrates radio’s influence in connecting communities and promoting dialogue.
Annan-Forson, who has spent decades behind the microphone, described radio as “the voice of the people,” a medium through which truth is sought and communities are advised. “The voice is a very powerful medium. It can make or break a broadcaster,” he said, emphasizing the responsibility that comes with being on air.
On the theme of this year’s World Radio Day—Radio and Artificial Intelligence: AI as a tool, not a voice—he expressed concern about AI replacing human broadcasters.
“AI might help with efficiency, but it can never empathize, understand cultural nuances, or connect emotionally with listeners,” Annan-Forson said.
He stressed that while AI can be a useful tool, it cannot replicate the human judgment, humor, and emotional intelligence that define effective radio.
Looking back at the evolution of radio, Annan-Forson recalled the discipline of early broadcasting, where scripts were written by hand and presenters had to deliver flawlessly.
Today, despite the digital and AI-driven landscape, he believes the essence of radio remains human-to-human connection. “If we miss that connectivity, we risk undermining the impact of radio,” he warned.
Annan-Forson concluded that a great broadcaster must combine a trusted voice, creativity, empathy, and intelligence, enabling listeners to rely on them not just for information but for reassurance and guidance, especially in times of uncertainty.
