Virgil Abloh paved the way for us in the fashion industry, says Kenneth Tetteh

He’s a legend regardless even if he has not affected you in anyway, you still have to pay that respect to him cos they are the people who have paved the way for you

Ghanaian fashion designer, Kenneth Tetteh says creatives sometimes forget about themselves while taking care of others.

His comment comes on the back of the death of Ghanaian fashion designer and entrepreneur Virgil Abloh who died on 28 November at age 41, after a private battle with cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

Speaking with Elvis Crystal in an interview on Asaase Radio’s Rush Hour, Tetteh that although he did not personally know Virgil Abloh, he “was really down” when he heard the news.

“I mean, it was a bit down for me when I heard the news. I was really down. Sometimes we put ourselves behind by taking care of others. As creatives, we forget about ourselves because like you’re saying, Christmas is coming; you’re thinking about designs, you have to make sure people look good on the birthday, their weddings and everything and forget about yourself,” he said.

The designer added that Abloh is a legend who paved the way for people like him in the industry.

He said, “He is in my field and these are people who have paved the way, he’s a legend regardless even if he has not affected you in anyway, you still have to pay that respect to him cos they are the people who have paved the way for you. And he is a Ghanaian as well.

“My style is not his style or his style is not my style. But as long as he has paid a lot to the industry, that I’m earnings from right now…”

“Sometimes when we lost people like this, it plays back to you, that’s the same way you’re also gonna go, but the question is, what are people gonna say about you so sometimes these are the things that sometimes when a legend or people like this are dead, you question yourself,” he said.
