Armed military officers had to fire shots to disperse an angry crowd which massed up at the Obuasi District Command to demand the immediate release of their colleagues in custody.
The suspects, numbering about 48 were trapped underground in one of the shafts belonging to AngloGold Obuasi Mines at Anweam in the Obuasi East District of the Ashanti Region.
The miners reportedly entered the shaft through unauthorised routes in search of gold pellets but were unable to come out as all exits were closed.
