VIDEO: Police clash with Arise Ghana demonstrators

The Arise Ghana demonstrators were wielding placards with inscriptions such as “Mr President, where is our money?” and “We are tired of you and your government”

The police on Tuesday (28 June 2022) fired tear gas to disperse members of the pressure group Arise Ghana as they protested in Accra over the high cost of living.

The demonstrators were wielding placards with inscriptions such as “Mr President, where is our money?” and “We are tired of you and your government”.

Some of the protesters pelted the police with stones and various other objects as security officers fired tear gas in the melee at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

The police said 12 personnel were injured in the clash.

Below is an official statement from the Ghana Police Service:

“”What a shame, we were there to protect you and ensure your safety, but you throw stones at us, injure and hurt us,” the Police Service tweeted, sharing pictures of injured personnel.

“This behaviour is unacceptable and must be condemned,” the service said.

At least 29 demonstrators have been arrested, a police source said.

The two-day Arise Ghana protest is expected to end on Wednesday.

Motivation for the protest

The organisers of the Arise Ghana demonstration have said that the reasons for their action include persistent and astronomical hikes in the cost of fuel.

The organisers maintain that repeated increases in fuel prices have inflicted excruciating hardship and distress on Ghanaians already struggling to cope in a tough economic climate.

They also say they are protesting against the government’s imposition of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) on the Ghanaian people, and are demanding a full-scale, bipartisan parliamentary probe into spending of monies for COVID-19 relief.
