Nine children have drowned on a lake in Faanaa-Bortianor, an island community in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, while returning from school.
According to reports, 12 students were crossing the lake in a canoe on their way from school at Wiagoman to Faanaa on Wednesday (10 May 2023).
The canoe was being paddled by one of the schoolchildren when it capsized midway through the journey, leading to the deaths of nine students.
There is a search ongoing for the three missing children.
The owner of the canoe is in police custody assisting with investigations.
Dan Bright Abayateye, the assembly member for Bortianor Electoral Area, said the community has been thrown into a state of mourning by the incident.
He called on stakeholders to support the community with a school building to prevent such occurrences in the future.
“If there is any NGO out there who can come to our aid [it will be very helpful], especially since there are no schools here in the community and the children have to use a boat to go to school,” he said.
