2023 VGMA: I had no idea I’ve been nominated, says rapper Kwame Yogot

Ghanaian multi-talented hiplife artiste, Kwame Yogot, has said he is not too enthused about awards and will rather prioritise winning the hearts of his fans.
Speaking on the Accra-Lagos-Joburg show on Asaase 99.5 Accra with Solomon Ter, the rapper said he was not even aware of his recent VGMA nomination in the best hiplife and best collaboration of the year categories.
“The truth is, I’m always busy in the studio,” Yogot, born Kenneth Kyeremateng, said. “The thing is, I wasn’t aware I had been nominated. You have to believe me, my focus is not on those awards.”
“In the last two years, I got plenty of nominations – about 10. I didn’t win even one, so right now I’m focusing on the work,” he added.
“The only nomination I know about is the Ghana Music Awards UK one, which I saw in the flyer that I was nominated for – the hiplife category of the year,” Kwame Yogot recalled.
Record label saga
He, however, said that he is no longer with any record label because after his hit song “Biibi besi”, fans were expecting a lot from him, but working with a label that didn’t see his vision was difficult.
“Currently, I’m not working with my label anymore, because I tried it the first time and I realised that I have something in me I have to pour out. They wanted to box me but my style is different, so I couldn’t continue working with them,” he said.
“After Biibi besi they made me release a lot of songs which I didn’t like. They invested a lot of money in the songs but it didn’t work,” Kwame Yogot said.
