VIDEO: Medikal remanded into prison custody for five days

Medikal was picked up by the police on Thursday (22 October) for brandishing a gun on social media amid the #FreeShattaWale campaign

The award-winning rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, has been remanded into prison custody by an Accra circuit court for five days.

He pleaded not guilty to a charge of displaying arms and ammunition. The accusation follows reports that Medikal brandished a pistol in footage published on Snapchat and later shared on other social media.

The Accra court, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Essandoh, remanded the rapper into custody at Ankaful Prison for five days.

Flight risk?

Counsel for the accused, Emmanuel Yeboah Gyan, had argued that his client is well known and has lived all his life in Ghana, and so would not disobey the orders of the court.

If granted bail, Medikal had reliable people to stand surety for him, including his wife and his mother, the lawyer argued.

However, counsel for the prosecution opposed the plea, arguing that the musician’s individual rights to bail are subordinate to the interests of the country, which must be protected.

The prosecution also noted that the allegations are still under investigation.

The charge sheet reads: “In the month of September 2021, whilst in his car, the accused without any reasonable excuse displayed a Ruger 9mm pistol and posted the video on his Snapchat social media platform.”
