Vice President visits site of Accra school collapse linked to 2012 GETFund project

The collapsed three-storey building near the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School has been identified as an abandoned project funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), Vice President Jane Nana Opoku-Agyemang has revealed following a visit to the site.

The structure, which collapsed on Sunday, 29 March, killed three people and left 20 others injured. The Vice President was briefed by officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) that the building was initiated in 2012 under the administration of the late President John Atta Mills but was never completed.

Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak confirmed the fatalities and hospitalisations after the incident, noting that the three deceased — two women and one man — have yet to be formally identified.

The collapse has sparked renewed concerns over abandoned and unsafe school infrastructure in the region. Vice President Opoku-Agyemang’s visit underscores the government’s intent to assess accountability and prevent future tragedies stemming from incomplete educational projects.

“This incident highlights the importance of monitoring and completing all GETFund projects to ensure the safety of students and the wider community,” officials at the site noted.

GES has since ordered students to stay away from the school pending safety inspections of all remaining structures.
