US strike on Iran undermines trust in American leadership – Yao Gebe

Dr Gebe expressed concern that the US, by bypassing multilateral engagement and striking Iran’s nuclear facilities, has significantly eroded the foundations of trust necessary for sustained international cooperation

International Relations Consultant Dr Yao Gebe says the United States’ unilateral military strike on Iran has undermined its credibility in global diplomacy and weakened trust in its leadership, especially among non-Western nations.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (23 June), Dr Gebe expressed concern that the US, by bypassing multilateral engagement and striking Iran’s nuclear facilities, has significantly eroded the foundations of trust necessary for sustained international cooperation.

“Global diplomacy is built on dialogue and predictability,” he said. “But what we are seeing is the opposite—actions that appear erratic and unilaterally driven.”

Dr Gebe argued that “US intelligence never proved Iran was on the cusp of building a nuclear weapon. So this action raises deeper questions—was this really about non-proliferation, or is this part of a broader regime change strategy?”

Drawing comparisons to the 2003 Iraq invasion, Dr Gebe warned that history could be repeating itself under the guise of nuclear threats. “We’ve been here before—with false intelligence about weapons of mass destruction. And it devastated a region and destabilised an entire generation,” he said.

He also cautioned that Iran may now rethink its participation in the non-proliferation regime altogether. “When you are bombed despite complying with inspections, despite engaging diplomatically, the natural question becomes, ‘What is the benefit of restraint?’”

Dr Gebe further stated that the attack risks reinforcing a dangerous precedent, where might supersedes right. “It weakens the moral authority of the West to promote diplomatic solutions elsewhere,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Dr Gebe stressed the need for a return to multilateral dialogue, especially involving neutral actors like the European Union, Oman, and Qatar. “Iran must be brought back to the table, but this can’t happen under the threat of further aggression,” he said.

He concluded by noting the potential blowback on developing countries. “In a world of interconnected economies, this strike could deepen global insecurity, push oil prices higher, and hurt fragile economies—Ghana included.”
