U.S. and Iran hold indirect talks in Rome to revive nuclear deal

Top diplomats from the United States and Iran meet in Rome for indirect negotiations aimed at reviving a nuclear deal and easing Middle East tensions.

Senior officials from the United States and Iran have begun indirect negotiations in Rome as part of renewed efforts to reach a breakthrough in the long-stalled talks surrounding Iran’s nuclear program. The talks, held with European intermediaries, aim to de-escalate growing tensions and potentially revive the 2015 nuclear accord known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

According to sources cited by Reuters, the diplomatic engagement in the Italian capital marks the most serious contact between the two countries in recent months. The meetings come amid increasing pressure on both sides to avoid further destabilization in the Middle East, particularly as tensions rise in the wake of regional conflicts and Iran’s expanding nuclear activities.

The U.S. delegation is reportedly led by Brett McGurk, the White House coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, while Iran’s team is said to be headed by Ali Bagheri Kani, the country’s top nuclear negotiator. European diplomats are facilitating the dialogue due to the absence of direct bilateral talks.

Although no major breakthrough has been announced, insiders say the discussions have been “constructive,” with both parties expressing cautious optimism about narrowing their differences. Key sticking points include Iran’s uranium enrichment levels, U.S. sanctions relief, and guarantees that future American administrations won’t unilaterally withdraw from any renewed agreement.

A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said the talks are “part of ongoing diplomatic efforts” and reiterated Washington’s commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Iran, on the other hand, maintains that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and insists that all sanctions must be lifted as part of any new agreement.

This renewed diplomatic initiative has garnered attention worldwide, especially as tensions between Iran and Israel continue to cast a shadow over regional stability.
