US Army band inspires Osu pupils with cultural exchange performance

The event, held on the school’s premises, was organised by the U.S. Embassy in collaboration with Osu Mantse, Notse Nii Nortey Owuo IV. It formed part of activities marking the Africa Land Forces Summit 2025

In a lively blend of music and cross-cultural connection, the United States Army Europe Barbarossa Woodwind Quintet delivered a spirited performance at Ringway Estate Basic School in Osu, Accra.

The event, held on the school’s premises, was organised by the US Embassy in collaboration with Osu Mantse, Notse Nii Nortey Owuo IV. It formed part of activities marking the Africa Land Forces Summit 2025.

Celebrating music as a universal language

The Barbarossa Woodwind Quintet, the premier chamber ensemble of the United States Army Europe (USAREUR) Band, is made up of elite musicians from across the U.S. They perform using flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and French horn—bringing to life a repertoire that spans both classical and contemporary genres.

Their visit to Ghana offered a rare opportunity for cultural exchange, inspiring pupils with a live performance that underscored music’s role as a bridge between people of different backgrounds.

The programme began with opening remarks and appreciation to the Ministry of Education and local partners. Pupils, filled with anticipation, welcomed the musicians with enthusiastic applause.

Addressing the gathering, the U.S. Embassy’s Cultural Affairs Attaché, Laniece Brooker, highlighted the purpose of the initiative.

“This is part of military cooperation between the U.S., Ghana, and many other countries. Through this wonderful collaboration, we’re also able to share the talents of amazing musicians like the U.S. Army Barbarossa Woodwind Quintet,” she said.

“Music brings us together. Even if we don’t speak the same language or share the same culture, we can always find common ground through music. Ghana has a rich musical tradition, and this is a celebration of that.”

Strengthening bilateral ties

In a related development, the Korle Klottey Municipal Director of Education, Philip Aidoo, emphasised the value of cultural engagement.

“It is an honour to be selected by our chief for today’s event. These programmes build strong cooperation not only between nations but also within communities.

“While the Americans learn how we do things here, we also learn from their way of life. This exchange strengthens the relationship between Ghana and the U.S. and lays the foundation for new partnerships between this school and the U.S. Embassy,” he said.

Staff Sergeant Osvaldo Correa, a trumpet player with the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Band and Chorus, also offered motivational words to the young audience.

“Love what you do and never give up. We all come from different backgrounds, but with persistence, discipline, and passion, you can achieve anything,” he said. “Don’t stop dreaming. Work hard, work smart, and stay focused on your goals.”

The event ended with cheers and renewed excitement among the pupils, many of whom left inspired to pursue their talents and embrace cultural exchange through music.
