Ursula Owusu-Ekuful: Ghana to secure intellectual property rights for “Kasa-Cash”

Kasa-Cash, an electronic pilfering in mobile money (Kasa-Cash system) concept is the brainchild of Selasi Ama Domi-Kuwornu

The government has began moves to secure intellectual property rights for Kasa-Cash, the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has said.

The innovation dubbed Kasa-Cash, was adjudged the ultimate product at last year’s “Ms Geek Competition” held in Zimbabwe.

Kasa-Cash, an electronic pilfering in mobile money (Kasa-Cash system) concept is the brainchild of Selasi Ama Domi-Kuwornu which enables illiterates, physically challenged, unserved and underserved communities to be able to effortlessly perform financial services without third-party assistance.

The product is being fully developed by Ghanaian firm, Ascend Digital Solution Limited for marketing.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (20 June), Owusu-Ekuful said the Communications Ministry will ensure Ama Domi-Kowornu owns intellectual property rights to the innovation.

“We want to ensure that she also owns the intellectual property to her idea. Its her idea, so no matter who develops it and takes it to the market, she has to own it,” she said.

“Mobile money was developed by two Kenyans who worked with Safaricom, they never were able to benefit from it because the company helped them to develop it and it’s deriving the benefits from it.”

Owusu-Ekuful added, “We want her [Domi-Kuwornu] to have the intellectual property rights to this idea as well, however, we need to work quickly because this is a solution that several experts are also looking at resolving and the sooner you get your idea to the market, you will get the benefit of that technology…”
