Upper West Regional Minister tours voter registration centres

Dr Hafiz Bin Salih expresses satisfaction with the level of compliance with COVID-19 protocols and admonishes EC registration officers to be professional in their activities

Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister, has urged individuals visiting registration centres to ensure strict adherence to the safety measures put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The Regional Minister said he was satisfied with the level of compliance with the COVID-19 protocols and admonished the registration officers to be professional as they discharge their duties at the registration centres.

He had earlier visited registration centres in seven other constituencies in the region to see for himself how things were going and judged that the numbers that registered at the centres were very impressive.

Adherence to COVID-19 protocols

Our correspondent witnessed that all the COVID-19 measures were being observed at the registration centres visited in the Upper West Region.

Almost everyone was seen wearing a face mask. Veronica buckets were also in place, with water and liquid soap for registrants to wash their hands before entering to the point of registration.

On party agents’ presence at the various centres, Dr Bin Salih said he was happy that the two main political parties were present at all the registration centres he visited.

He called on all other political parties to have representatives at all registration centres to improve Ghana’s democratic process.

The party agents also said the process has been smooth so far and assured the Regional Minister of their total compliance with the exercise.

Security

Adequate security was provided at all the registration centres, including a patrol team across the region.

Dr Bin Salih distributed face masks and hand sanitiser to people and officials of the Electoral Commission undertaking the exercise at the centres he visited.

The Regional Minister urged all eligible Ghanaians to participate in the voter registration exercise to enable them to vote in the 7 December general election.

Dr Bin Salih will be visiting the other constituencies in the Upper West Region before the registration ends.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has said turnout for the exercise has been very encouraging. As of Monday (20 July), over nine million applicants had registered across the country.

The Commission expects to register about 15 million Ghanaians by the end of the registration. The exercise started on Tuesday 30 June and will end on Thursday 6 August.
