Upper East: Robbers kill man on Kologo-Naaga road

According to reports, the deceased was visiting his wife in Kologo on Wednesday (12 January 2022) night when the robbers killed him

A man who has been identified as Bismarck Abavarise Wewutajega has reportedly been killed on the Kologo-Naaga road of the Upper East Region by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers.

The robbers attacked and killed Bismarck at the Biu junction.

Reports say, Bismarck, whose body the police have released to the family for burial, was visiting his wife in Kologo on the night of 12 January, when the robbers pounced on him at the intersection and shot him in the process.

According to reports, he was shot at close range from the back in the chest cavity, indicating he may have attempted to escape from his attackers.

The robbers bolted into the thicket with some belongings of the victim after perpetrating the attack. An old, black Apsonic motorbike belonging to the victim was, however, found at the robbery scene.

Assemblyman for the Kologo Kulebingo-Zoongo electoral area, Nchor Dayelle Jacob, confirming the incident, said the attack has since sparked fear among residents and road users.

He said there were other robbery attacks on residents on the same road within the week prior to the killing of Bismarck.

Nchor said: “On 12 January 2022, around 8pm, one guy from our area was coming back from Navrongo and when he got to the Biu junction, he was attacked by armed robbers. Then again somebody was also travelling on that same road and the robbers shot him. These attacks happened before the robbers attacked this man and killed him.”

“That guy (the deceased) is married to a lady from our area (Kologo). His wife came to the house and he was going to visit her and when the (robbers) shot him.” Nchor confirmed.

Call for police patrols

The Assemblyman appealed to the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly and the Police Administration to set up a patrol team to undertake nightly patrols in the area.

He also appealed for the immediate construction of a police station in the area. Nchor said the presence of the police in the area was the surest way the activities of robbers could be reduced.

“My appeal is that the police should get us a police post in Kologo. If they can’t get us the police post now, they can do night patrols. If the police are able to do these night patrols, it would reduce the incidents of armed robbery in Kologo. It is my appeal to the municipal assembly and the police.”

Kologo Naba’s appeal for a police station

At the celebration of the Yesiga Festival this year, the Paramount Chief of Kologo Traditional Area, Naba Tandegre Wongrewukugre Asobayire IV, appealed to the government for infrastructure for his area.

While the chief was very grateful to the government for commencing work on the construction of the Kologo-Naaga road, which is in a deplorable condition and a source of worry to him and his people, Naba Tandegre said Kologo needed a lot of help in the area of health care, education, agriculture, portable drinking water and crime prevention.

He said crime was gradually finding a place in Kologo due to the absence of a police station. Naba Tandegre said criminals have taken advantage of the poor state of the Kologo-Naaga road to torment and rob residents and road users.

Speaking at the festival, Naba Tandegre said the activities of criminals in the area has led to the loss of several lives and property.

He said just as the government paid attention to their cry for the improvement of their road, it was time the government gave similar heed to their call for the construction of a police station in Kologo.

In spite of its growing population and economic activities, Kologo lacks basic amenities and a police station is one of them.

Naba Tandegre said it is a huge worry to them as they are always compelled to rely on the Navrongo Municipal command for help in the events of robbery attacks.

He said Navrongo is quite far from Kologo and the miscreants mostly got away before the police arrived.

The Kologo Naba, therefore, appealed to authorities to help fight crime in his area with the construction of a police station.
