Unique by Design Project champions disability inclusion through fashion, innovation, and creativity

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Unique by Design Project is redefining the future of fashion by creating an inclusive platform where creativity, accessibility, and diversity take center stage.

Spearheaded through a collaboration between the Ability Talks with Elizabeth Patterson Podcast, Flyest Incorporated, Samuel Boakye, Creative Director of the Kwasi Paul brand, and the Girls Education Initiative of Ghana (GEIG), the project seeks to challenge stereotypes, celebrate individuality, and increase opportunities for persons with disabilities within Ghana’s fashion and creative industries.

Unique by Design is more than a fashion initiative—it is a movement that recognizes that every individual deserves to be seen, valued, and represented. By intentionally bringing together designers, models with disabilities, fashion professionals, educators, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and advocates, the project demonstrates that disability is not a limitation but an essential part of human diversity.

The project will feature a series of activities designed to promote inclusion and innovation, including adaptive fashion showcases, industry masterclasses, public awareness campaigns, entrepreneurship development opportunities, and stakeholder engagement sessions. These activities will provide platforms for emerging designers to create adaptive and accessible fashion while empowering persons with disabilities to participate fully as models, creators, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders.

A major highlight of the initiative will be the Unique by Design Fashion Showcase, where models with disabilities will walk alongside mainstream models in a powerful celebration of beauty, confidence, and inclusion. The showcase aims to challenge conventional standards of fashion while inspiring greater accessibility across the industry.

Speaking about the initiative, Elizabeth Patterson, Founder of the Ability Talks with Elizabeth Patterson Podcast and disability inclusion advocate, said:

“Fashion has the power to tell stories, influence culture, and change perceptions. Unique by Design reminds us that inclusion is not charity—it is good design, good business, and a reflection of the diverse world we all share. Every person deserves to be represented, celebrated, and given the opportunity to thrive.”

The project also seeks to build stronger partnerships with government institutions, development partners, corporate organizations, educational institutions, disability organizations, and members of the fashion industry to promote accessible design, inclusive employment, and equal participation throughout the fashion value chain.

Unique by Design aligns with the global commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on reducing inequalities, promoting decent work and economic growth, advancing quality education, achieving gender equality, and fostering partnerships for sustainable development.

Organizers are inviting designers, brands, sponsors, media organizations, development partners, disability advocates, educational institutions, and the general public to join the movement and help create a fashion industry where everyone belongs.

Together, we can prove that true style is inclusive—and that every person is Unique by Design.
