Government says several of its soldiers wounded during an attack on a peacekeeping position in southern Lebanon are in stable condition, with one serviceman undergoing surgery after sustaining serious injuries.
In an update posted on social media, Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi said four soldiers who suffered minor injuries were recovering well.
He added that another soldier who sustained serious injuries to both legs and the hip had been evacuated to Beirut, where he underwent surgery earlier on Saturday.
“He is stable and recuperating,” Genfi said.
The troops were serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), a peacekeeping mission tasked with monitoring the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon and helping maintain stability along the border.
Genfi said a fire outbreak at the soldiers’ accommodation also destroyed personal belongings belonging to 15 officers.
Following the incident, Ghana lodged a formal complaint at the United Nations headquarters, stressing that parties involved in the conflict must respect the safety and operational space of peacekeepers deployed in the area.
The deputy minister also acknowledged support from France, whose Minister Delegate for the Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs, Alice Rufo, contacted Ghanaian authorities to express solidarity.
According to Genfi, the French government has also raised concerns about the attack with UN officials, noting that French peacekeepers are deployed in Lebanon under the same mission.
Ghana said it appreciated the gesture and reiterated that measures were being taken to ensure the protection of its troops serving under the UN flag.
