Ghana, Sudan to deepen relations

The Sudanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Babikir Elamin, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister of the Interior, Mr Mark Owen Woyongo, where the two discussed issues relating to security, immigration, trade, health and the general development of the two countries.

The visit provided the two officials the opportunity to pledge their countries’ preparedness and commitment towards further collaboration and strengthening the bonds of friendship which already exist between Ghana and Sudan.

Mr Babikir emphasised the importance of citizens of the two countries being able to move easily to and from the other’s country.

He recalled the long-standing relationship between Sudan and Ghana, and expressed the hope that this could further be taken higher.

The Interior Minister gave the assurance that Ghana would continue to co-operate with her neighbours.

Trade relations

Mr Woyongo said it was important for African countries to encourage intra-African trade.

He observed that “We always talk about trading with countries outside Africa, but it is equally crucial that African countries look at trading among themselves”.

The minister also expressed concern about safety and security within African states and said it was important that we support each other.

Mr Woyongo referred to a statement made by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah on the eve of Ghana’s independence to the effect that, “Ghana’s independence was meaningless unless it was linked with the total liberation of the  African continent”.

Mr Woyongo said that statement made by Africa’s great leader was very relevant today as it was at the time Dr Nkrumah made the statement.

He referred to various supports made by Ghana to peacekeeping efforts within the region and said currently there was a Ghanaian Police contingent in South Sudan.

The Minister of the Interior recalled his visit to Zambia recently and said Zambia and South Africa were very happy with Ghana’s contribution towards peacekeeping and the liberation of Africa.
