Power outages affecting businesses in Krachi West

Speaking to Asaase Business, residents who rely on power for their businesses and daily activities stated the situation is collapsing their enterprises

Residents of Krachi West municipality have lashed out at the Volta River Authority (VRA) over the unreliable power supply in recent months.

Krachi West is one of the fastest-growing towns in the Oti Region, with majority of the locals working as fashion designers, printing press operators and cold store owners. Some have been forced to close down their businesses due to the unstable power situation.

Speaking to Asaase Business, residents who rely on power for their businesses and daily activities stated the situation is collapsing their enterprises in the municipality. In recent times, either the lights go out completely for days or there is a low voltage that cannot power their gadgets.

“For some months now, we don’t have the power to work with and we only stay at work or do cutting while we wait for the power to come,” Aboagye Dacosta, a fashion designer, told Asaase Business. “At times we have to depend on the old system of using the hand sewing machine which is affecting our work. The government and the authorities must do something about this for us.”

They are therefore calling on the government as a matter of urgency to come to their aid to save their jobs.

According to Ben Ntoso, the youth president of the area, the situation needs serious attention since many people depend on the power for their survival.

He said all efforts to get officials of VRA to address their problem have yielded no results.

Officials of the VRA in the area are yet to respond to calls about the power situation in Krachi West.
