UEW final-year student found dead in hostel after days of isolation
The male student, whose identity is yet to be officially disclosed, was discovered on the evening of Tuesday, 11 June, after fellow students noticed a strong, foul odour coming from his locked room

A final-year Political Science student at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has been found dead in his hostel room under heartbreaking circumstances that have left the campus community in shock.
The male student, whose identity is yet to be officially disclosed, was discovered on the evening of Tuesday, 11 June, after fellow students noticed a strong, foul odour coming from his locked room.
The stench, which had lingered for days, prompted students to force entry, only to be met with the tragic discovery of his lifeless body.
According to sources close to the deceased, he had been battling a severe leg infection that caused persistent pain and made mobility difficult. Students who knew him say he also lived with sickle cell disease, which contributed to his deteriorating health condition.
“He is a sickler and had sores on his leg, which usually caused unpleasant smells,” one student said. “Because of that, his roommate refused to stay in the same room with him, so he stayed alone.”
This forced isolation may have contributed to his tragic fate. In an effort to mask the odor and avoid stigma, the student is believed to have locked himself inside his room, cutting off access to help or intervention.
It is suspected that he died several days before his body was eventually found.
The incident has triggered an outpouring of grief and concern across campus, sparking urgent conversations about the state of mental health support, peer support systems, and student welfare.
“This is more than just a tragedy — it’s a wake-up call,” said a student representative. “We need to do more to ensure that students, especially those battling chronic illnesses, are not left alone or forgotten.”
University authorities have launched investigations into the matter, promising to review welfare protocols and determine the exact circumstances leading to the student’s death.
